Pugs

Our neighbors have pug puppies, so needless to say, our kids are crazy in love with them. The first thing Claire said when I get there is, "They're selling them, Mom!" Then I get that look of pleading, the I-would-love-this-puppy-till-the-day-I-die look. So I asked Samantha, our neighbor, to tell Claire how much she would be selling them for. When Claire heard $500, there was no need for me to go into the oft-repeated mantra of "I don't need any more poop to clean up" that she knows by heart. She's old enough now that she understands money somewhat. Enough said. But they sure are cute! I don't know how I didn't get any pictures of Anson with the puppies. He kept picking them up and carrying them around with this cute look on his face--like he looks at babies. I'm sure we'll be over there every day until they're all sold, so I'll have to get a picture of him.

Kid Talk

Yesterday we went to the Clovis Rodeo Parade--a yearly must for all Clovis cowboys and wannabes like us. As we were walking there this conversation took place. I'm not sure why it struck me, but I just had to write it down.

Ellie: Oh, look at the humongous tower!
Coleman: Did you know that has water in it? Look at all that electrical on top!
Mom: Those are actually antennae.
Claire: Antennae are for contacting aliens in outer space.
Ellie: I don't like aliens.
Anson: I do!

Now I'm sure that doesn't sound nearly as funny written down as it did at the moment, but it just tickled me! It was all said in such a matter of fact way, everyone participated, it was just so . . . kids! I love those moments. Another great moment as the parade started and there were girls on horses right in front of us and Ellie turned to me with her huge eyes and excitement all over her face and says, "Mom, this is AMAZING!!!"

After Stake Conference today Garrett was lamenting that the older kids don't seem to know how to whisper, only Ellie, to which she replied, "Daddy teached me how to whispered." She has the greatest grammar of any of our kids. She still gets her pronouns all mixed up and uses "mines" frequently (as in, "Is that pen mines?") She says, won't you instead of will you, as in, "Mom, won't you please come wipe me?" As if she has to beg. She also stutters when she's excited or distracted, which would worry us except that it's not all the time. It is very entertaining and endearing. She just has so much personality! I made this scrapbook page to memorialize Ellie's fun personality. In case you didn't know, you can click on the picture to see the full-size image. The color doesn't look great--if anyone knows how to remedy this problem with blogger, let me know!

New Skills

I am so proud of my newly acquired digital scrapbooking skills that I had to share my creation! I made this invitation for Claire's birthday party and just had it printed as a photo at Costco. It was so slick! Any of you veterans out there (paper or digital) can give me pointers--I know I have a lot to learn. I'm sure I won't be creating tons of scrapbooks yet, but it's nice to know that I can do it. And I felt so crafty and creative!

Future Federers

Garrett has been giving tennis lessons to Claire and Coleman and some friends, the Halvorsons. It is so cute to watch the kids learning and really fun to see how excited Garrett gets. Yesterday during a drill Coleman hit a forehand (pictured below) that Garrett was giddy about. He turned to me and said, "This is my proudest moment of Coleman's life." And he was totally serious.

Claire isn't as enthusiastic about the whole thing, but since she has a friend there (who is very interested) she endures it. We're hoping that she will be willing to keep with it long enough to get a little better so she can see that it is really fun. She has a lot of natural ability, but she doesn't have a lot of desire--yet.

Garrett didn't mind that I posted this picture even though he looks really funny because it shows how Claire is looking at the ball through the racket like Federer. That was his main lesson for the kids yesterday. Seriously, he told them all about how this one thing makes Federer the best in the world and he wants them to learn it from the beginning. Have I mentioned lately how obsessed he is with tennis? See new favorite picture below :)

Lake Season

Lake season has officially started! We love this great family activity so much. The younger kids have to remember how much they like it each year, but by the time we leave they are talking about coming back. Coleman was a little hesitant to wakeboard--he said he didn't remember how, so I told him "it's like riding a bike." He says, "No it's not, cause you ride sideways and a bike is forwards and your hands are out here and . . ." A little explanation was needed. But once he got out there and wakeboarded like a pro he got my meaning. I didn't have my camera, so I'm including a picture from last year. He learned to get a little air last year.

This one is from the year before, right before he turned 5--What a stud!

Garrett also wakeboarded and I skied, but we both wore wet suits--wimpy, I know. Coleman was so tough--he jumped right in in just his swim shorts and life jacket. I'll also include a couple of last years' pictures of us, just for fun. For those who've never been here, we're lucky enough to have these man-made lakes very close to our house. We get to ski a lot more than we used to when we had to drive 45 minutes to the lake.

We had a great visit with Garrett's parents this week. Claire and Coleman had a special visit to their classes from Grandpa Mike, cowboy poet. He was a huge hit with the kids and the teachers, and Claire and Coleman felt pretty special. Coleman's class will be studying cowboys next week, so it was the perfect thing to kick it off.

Grandma Dixie was able to spend lots of time just loving and playing!

Thanks for a great visit--we love you!!!

Bootiful

Ellie gave herself a little makeover today. As we were getting her cleaned up, she was crying and crying saying, "But I look bootiful!" Yes, it got on the carpet (only a little) and on her blankets. Ah, the cost of beauty! I mean, booty.

A Time Out

Yesterday I attended Time Out For Women, a conference sponsored by Deseret Book. It was very enjoyable--entertaining, fun, uplifting, spiritual--all the things that a woman wants in a "time out." The theme was "A Joyful Life." There are a couple of things that I would like to share.

Michael Wilcox, an LDS author and teacher, spoke about the wonder and dignity of our souls and said, "Our true self is us at our best, not our worst." We sometimes think that our weaknesses and low points define our true selves, and when someone compliments us or notices something that we do well, we say to ourselves, "Yes, but if only you knew the real me." He said that we need to remember that the real us is the good things about us.

Emily Watts, also an author and editor for Deseret Book, talked about what she calls "motherguilt" and had us all laughing about how we mothers tend to think that everything that goes wrong in our homes or with our kids is our fault. But just because we are the "core" of our home doesn't make everything our fault! She was asked the question "How can I balance everything?" and she answered it by saying that it was fundamentally the wrong question, because we can't balance everything every day. She said the question we should be asking is, "How can I know what is most important for me to do today?" I thought that was a great thing to remember, because sometimes the whole picture of responsibilities is overwhelming. But if we realize that we can't do it all every day and that it's okay, then we can better decide what is most important today.

Dean Hughes, author and husband of Kathleen Hughes, talked about putting off the natural man and becoming meek. He said he's trying to be more meek by using self-talk when he's in situations that usually upset him and cause him to treat people badly. This was a good reminder to me, that I don't always have to be in a hurry, and that I need to remember that people (mainly my kids) are more important than getting things done in a certain time frame.

Sharon Larson, who used to be in the General YW Presidency, gave a great talk about letting joy and happiness come into our lives. She talked about opening our hearts and clearing out the contamination so joy can come in. She discussed forgiveness, trust in the Lord, letting go of competition, and keeping our covenants as ways to do this. She was very inspirational.

I'll end with my favorite quote of the day from a book that Emily Watts quoted called Uses of Adversity. "The gospel of Jesus Christ is not insurance against pain. It is resource in event of pain."

Happy Birthday Anson!

Anson loves trains, so his doting mother made him a train birthday cake. It wasn't my fanciest or most beautiful, but it turned out pretty cute and he LOVED it! He kept standing at the table and pointing and saying, "Look! Birthday cake!" Every time he saw it he got excited and pointed out the different parts. So all the effort was worth it. Plus, I experimented with coconut oil and had great success. I used half butter and half coconut oil for the decorator icing, which usually needs to be shortening, and it worked wonderfully and it tasted even better.

He makes great excited faces--I just love them! This is a present from Grammy and Grandpa . . .

. . . and here he is getting another one. Do you think he likes it?

Love that handsome face! I can't believe our baby is 2! He is such a loving, happy boy. We are so blessed to have him.

He also loves games, so he got this game that also involves pounding--a great love of any normal 2-year-old boy.

I had to include this--he's listening to the entire Burbidge clan singing Happy Birthday. I don't think he quite knew what to think of it!

Maybe his favorite part of the whole weekend--being Grandpa's helper. My dad always helps me out with my yard and this time was no different. I had a list when he came and we got it all done in a day, plus a little more. Anson was very happy to take weeds to the wheelbarrow for Grandpa.

Or this could have been his favorite part of the weekend. Grammy and Grandpa will have to fight it out on this one! He loves getting comfort from Grammy.

I just saw that Garrett added this clip--thanks! It's from his phone, so not the greatest quality, but still fun to see.

Easter--Finally!

I am finally getting around to posting some photos from Easter! I am driving myself insane trying to figure out Photoshop Elements and spending way too much time doing edits, so I'll stop that for now and just post a few. I did learn how to replace people though--Ellie was replaced in this one. Isn't that cool? Now I just need to learn a few more tricks!

This is my adorable niece, Maegan, Lisa's newest addition. Everyone was fighting over holding her. She is a very sweet baby and very good natured.

This is my favorite egg hunt picture. I love when the little ones finally figure out what's going on. Oh my gosh, there are treats in these eggs! For much of the afternoon Anson could be seen carrying around half an egg with jelly beans, occasionally eating one, but mostly carrying.

Ellie was very fun to watch also--it was just all so exciting!! But most things in life are exciting for our little Elisabeth.

This is my niece, Abby. It's the concentration lips. I just can't stand it!

Anson, Ellie, Abby, Thomas--getting serious about checking out those Easter baskets!

The best I could do with all the Coleman Cousins--all 13 of them!

There are lots and lots of pictures of my cousin, Rob, wrestling and playing with the kids. This is my favorite because as we were looking through all the pictures Garrett said, "It looks like you're about to kick Rob in this one." To which Coleman replied, "I am!" That's our boy!

My beautiful sister Wendy with Dad--who is also attractive :)

And to finish it off, Maegan content at the end of the fun-filled day on Grammy's shoulder. I think Grammy was equally content.

Believe it or not, after all this commotion, Mom and Dad called me a few days later and said that they were both feeling a little sad about how quiet the house was. I thought they'd be breathing a sigh of relief! So they're coming to our house this weekend for a dose of loud and a heaping helping of chaos--hope you're ready!
