I can't decide how to feel about this. I recently made nice little nests for my chickens to lay eggs in right by their coop. They're off the ground, filled with hay, one for each of them--I thought they'd be thrilled, thanking me profusely. Instead, they have utterly ignored the cozy nests and decided to lay eggs here:
If you've never been to my house before, this pot sits right at my front door. So on one hand it's quite convenient for them to lay here, because I can open my front door and pick up my eggs. Claire said it's like in the "olden days" when they would deliver milk to your door. I totally agree. Very convenient. In fact, if you know anything about chickens you'll know that they make quite a bit of noise when they're laying eggs. So not only are they delivered, but I am also notified when they are ready. They're still warm when I pick them up.
On the other hand, notice the dirt all around the pot. I don't know why they feel the need to scratch dirt out every time they get in there, but apparently they do. There is dirt thrown all over the walk and doormat right at the front door. Not the most welcoming sight. The plant rarely gets watered making it very easy for them to throw the dry dirt about. I've contemplated moving the pot into the planter right by it, but I rather like it where it is. I don't fancy the idea of letting the chickens influence my decorating. And is it kind of snobby to say that I feel like it's a little bit trashy to have chickens laying eggs at your front door? But who am I kidding, I have 3 chickens roaming my yard. Can't get much trashier.
So either I can continue to enjoy my front door egg delivery service, or I can try to make them stop using my pot. Knowing as I do that they have pea-sized brains, I'm probably better off to just let them have the pot. Maybe I should just fill it with hay and call it good. Or maybe I should water the poor plant.

Chickens roaming your yard is NOT trashy-- it's frugal, it's self-sufficiency and extremely practical-- you don't have to go farther than your front step-- or planter-- for fresh eggs...just look out for the chicken poo.
I'm going to have to disagree with the previous comment and say that yes, the chickens are trashy! However, since they're there, I would definitely opt for convenience and leave the pot. Could you move it to the side a bit so the dirt didn't land right on your mat? Also, if you don't water the plant, (so presumably it's not very pretty) why do you love it so much? Just sayin. . .
When we had chickens they would lay their eggs in the middle of the lawn and on the seat of the tractor. I never liked them. The mean chickens would lay their eggs in a bush or the tall grass and we would not find them until we stepped on them or the kids were playing and saw them. I think one layed its eggs down a squirrel hole! LOL!
Amy, this is totally hilarious! I laughed right out loud at your funny sense of humor and the funny situation. Hey, if nothing else, at least it gives you something very out of the ordinary and amusing to blog about! I think my kids would be in heaven with a hen sitting at our front door! Think of your decorating possibilities come Easter! Good luck! THanks for making me laugh!
So, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the chickens in the "front" yard thing. I've never been to your house, so I'm trying to picture it. Don't chickens normally go in the back yard where they're sort of contained? How/Why do they stay in the front yard? They sound like very obedient little chickens. I say let them lay in the pot. At least you don't have to go on a scavenger hunt each day to find them.
P.S. Welcome back to the blogosphere! We've missed you!
