We enjoyed a great weekend at my parents' house for Memorial Day weekend. That seems to be a tradition for us. Our anniversary is always over that weekend, so it's nice to spend it there. We have built in babysitters! Thanks Mom and Dad!This year we had a special afternoon at the Newcastle Cemetery visiting the graves of some of our relatives. I was really glad that we did it, not only to show our love and respect, but to teach our children about our family members that have died. At my dad's suggestion, the adults took turns sharing memories about each of them. The grandchildren were amazingly interested and attentive! My favorite was my brother's memory of our great-grandma Staples and how she would always tell him, "Kid, don't ever let them take your teeth!" She had false teeth (I guess they're called dentures, but that's what she always called them!) since she was in her 40s, and they weren't particularly good ones, so that was an important piece of advice from her!
We also enjoyed the fun activities that go along with visiting Grandma and Grandpa, one of which was fishing. Boy, was Coleman in heaven! Ellie really enjoyed herself too, but her favorite part was playing with the worms with Anson. Claire wasn't really interested, but she was excited for Coleman when he caught fish. I caught a couple too, but Coleman couldn't decide who "won" (I didn't know I was entering a contest when we started). He caught the most, with 3 fish, and I caught the biggest and the most variety, because I caught a perch and a bass, whereas he only caught perch. What a dilemma this was for him! He talked about it for a very long time.

Bare Bums
I recently found this picture that my sister Wendy took several years ago when she and my nephew Parker were here to visit us. Parker was 6, Claire was 4 and Coleman was 2. We were up in the mountains and the kids decided they wanted to enjoy the water even though we were unprepared. I seem to remember they actually got in, never mind the fact that it's snow-melt. It's one of my very favorite pictures. I just love naked bums! I just want to squeeze them!

Choir Concert

This is Claire with her director, Nicole Simes.

Since Claire was a tiny girl she has had a musical gift. When she was only 3 she sang in Sacrament Meeting with me and my friend. She used to have no problem singing in front of people at all. She's a little more reserved now, but she still enjoys it and is extremely talented. I am constantly amazed at how quickly she can learn a song, how she can remember difficult music, and how she can sing on key better than I can! I wish she had more desire to learn an instrument, because I know that would benefit her even more. Maybe someday!

Real Heroes
I made this page for Garrett as a tribute to his maternal grandparents, Frank and June Swallow. He sent me this picture on my mission with this caption on the back: "This is one of my favorite pictures. My grandparents are my heroes. They exemplify a celestial marriage. This was taken on their mission in Israel."
I have loved them as my own grandparents since we met. They love everyone and accept everyone. They live very close to Temple Square which enabled them to walk to the temple several days a week to serve there until a couple of years ago. They have even welcomed my parents to their home while they were attending General Conference. They love to have the great-grandkids visit them. Our kids call them GG and Poppy!
Grandma and Grandpa Swallow have a tradition of having "Sunday Sundaes" at their home each fast Sunday. All family members in town are invited to their home for ice-cream, sometimes a potluck meal. We love going any time we are in town. It is such a wonderful thing for them to do to keep extended family in touch. Since we don't have family in our town, we have started our own version of Sunday Sundaes. We invite a couple of other families over for ice-cream and have enjoyed getting to know our ward family even more.
Thank you Grandma and Grandpa for being such great examples to us--we want to be just like you when we grow up! We love you!

Fried Chicken
What is it that I love so much about fried chicken? I have loved it with a pure and abiding love since very early childhood. I don't remember ever choosing anything else for my birthday dinner. My mom even made it for me the first night home from my mission. And it's not fried chicken in general that I love. It's only the kind my mom makes (well, my grandma made it and I can make it too) with the fried chicken gravy and mashed potatoes. I actually don't like any other kind, at least that I've ever tried. I don't make it often, for obvious reasons, but when I do it is sure to evoke pleasant feelings. I always feel so good while I'm eating it. Maybe it's because it tastes so good. Maybe it's the good memories of childhood. Whatever it is, I love it. I love it a lot.

Happy Birthday Claire--Finally!
I am finally able to sit at the computer for a while so I can get back to posting! My ankle is doing great. I am walking on it and getting around just fine. I have to ice it several times a day and be careful with it, but it seems to be healing quickly.
Claire just turned 9--I can't believe it! It has already been a year since her baptism. I wanted to post a picture of it since I didn't have the blog last year. She already looks so much older!
I made big flower cookies for Claire's class for her birthday. I think she enjoys that part even more than the party! She loves to be in charge and get to pass out treats. These are her good friends and the boy that likes her--a lot. He's never too far away from Claire if he can help it!
She does love friends, so she decided (with very little prompting from me!) to have an old fashioned, regular ol' birthday party. No theme, no gift bags, no characters, just friends, food, and fun! (How cheesy am I?) The girls made individual pizzas, watched a movie, ate cake and ice-cream, and just had a great time.
Claire made up a couple of games for them to play, on the spot, like guessing how many petals were on each cupcake (150, by the way), and an introduce and tell about yourself game. She really thrives on being in front of a group and being in charge. I hope that's a good thing!
I had to post this one of her opening presents from my parents, because Ellie was just as excited as Claire was! They gave Claire "Enchanted" and now Ellie wants to watch it every day.So happy birthday to our little girl! She's as sweet and adorable as ever, just not so chunky!

Ouch!
I was planning to post a blog with pictures of Claire's birthday yesterday, but then I went and sprained my ankle! This is my view all day right now . . .
I have to keep it elevated all the time and ice it 20 minutes every hour, so the full blog will have to wait. I thought it might work to put my foot up on my computer desk, but I can't reach the keyboard very well and my back already hurts, so it will have to wait. Birthday pictures coming soon!

Primary Joys
I wanted to share a great experience we had in Primary a couple of weeks ago. I teach Valiant 11/12 so I am in the Senior Primary Sharing Time. I can't describe what happened as well as this email from Judy Ryan, who was there also. She is a professor and very well spoken, so I'll let her words paint the picture!
"Senior Primary yesterday was something amazing, and I wanted to share it with the sisters who weren't fortunate enough to have been there, as a thank you to the Primary workers and also a tribute to the parenting of stellar young learners.
"The subject of Sharing Time was the 12 apostles and something to do with keys. Sister Mills flipped a huge portable board around and there, in a linear array, was the first presidency, the 12 apostles, and about 4,000 little gray keys. There was an audible response from the children, hushed and respectful.
"So I'm thinking to myself, 'How long did it take her to cut out all those keys?' and I'm sure that's going to be the question asked when, before she ever gets a chance to launch into her presentation, the first little hand goes up. But I was wrong.
"'Those are all men. Why aren't there any girls up there?' This from a sweet little boy. 'Hang on,' I'm thinking. 'This is going to be interesting.'
"Well, it was. I learned more in the next 20 minutes than I thought I didn't know. One question after the other, and I have to emphasize, they were serious, well-intentioned curiosities handled with forthright care, answered one after the other. I can't remember all of them, but here is a sampling:
-'Can a girl ever get the priesthood?'
-'Was President Monson ever just a normal boy?'
-'How do you get to be an apostle? Do you sign up?' [like an after-school activity: There's the volleyball list and if you want to go out for Apostle, sign up here.] (Amy's note: this was Claire, and I about fell out of my chair!)
-'Why are there 12 apostles and 14 pictures?'
-'Was President Monson ever at the bottom?'
-'What happens if one of them in the middle dies?' [To illustrate this, Sister Mills regretfully killed off one of the middle apostles and showed how they would shuffle on up.]
-[and my personal favorite] 'None of these guys are from here. Are they all from 2nd Ward?'
"Well, there were more. In fact, she had to cut off the questions for the closing song, and I was afraid there might be a small riot. If so, I would volunteer to lead it.
"I'm trying to analyze why this was one of those rare moments educators dream of, and these are my conclusions:
"1. She was really prepared. I don't know what she was going to do, but there were lots of little gray keys and it was going to be wonderful.
2. What she prepared was not more important than the children she was teaching. In other words, she taught with the spirit.
3. The subject had relevancy. Perhaps the children had been hearing their parents talk about the change in the first presidency and that fueled their curiosity. From where I was sitting, I could turn my head owl-like and see all their faces, which I did. They were ALL engaged.
4. There was something compelling about the pictures themselves that added to the spirit (and perhaps the sense of authority) in the room.
"...or maybe it was just something magic in all those little gray keys."
Thank you Judy for reminding us what amazing spirits we have in our homes, that we have the blessing of serving in Primary, and that we need to stop and enjoy these moments! And thank you Jenni for following the Spirit and letting the questions flow.
